Detail. Initial ‘E’ for Exultate Deo (Psalm 80(81)). In the bowl of the initial E, King David is playing three bells and his attendant youth is playing a portable organ. The 6-line historiated initial has terminals of trefoils: in the top terminal a grotesque musician is playing the drum and pipe, while showing under his tunic a bearded face on goat’s legs. Small flourished initials in blue and gold, and line-filler.
