Roberto Valturio’s De re militari ([Verona], 1472) was a hugely influential analysis of warfare. This edition is particularly noteworthy for the 82 woodcuts showing military machines, including these showing cannons. The woodcuts, possibly the work of Matteo de’ Pasti, the Veronese illuminator, set new standards for illustrated books.
